Recover Deleted Uniview and Uniarch NVR FootageReading the Drive When the NVR Has Nothing to Offer
Uniview documents its recorders well right up to the point where a recording is gone, and then the manuals fall silent. The NVR has no undelete and the company publishes no recovery route. The drive is where the footage is, and this guide explains how to read it on a PC, what Uniview's Normal and Abnormal labels mean and how to handle a forgotten password along the way.
Deleted footage on a Uniview or Uniarch NVR stays on the hard drive until the recorder overwrites it. The NVR has no undelete, Uniview publishes no recovery route and the drive carries the recorder's own layout rather than a Windows file system. Shut the NVR down, take the drive out, dock it on a Windows PC, skip the initialise prompt and open it in software that recognises the Uniview layout. The recordings export as MP4. The admin password plays no part.
Zhejiang Uniview Technologies entered IP video in 2005, became an independent company in 2011 and has held the third largest share of the Chinese market for most of the decade since, with Uniarch as its home and small-business sub-brand and partners such as Videcon in the UK selling its recorders under their own names. Its NVRs are well documented for setup and thin on anything to do with recovery. This guide fills that gap.
Which Uniview and Uniarch recorders does this cover?
| Series | Bays | Drive limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| NVR301 (Easy) | 1 | 6 TB | Home and small shop |
| NVR302 (Prime) | 2 | 6 TB each | Includes XVR301 and XVR302 hybrids |
| NVR308 | 8 plus eSATA | 10 TB each | RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10; hot spare |
| NVR516 | 16 | 16 TB each | RAID 0 to 60, hot swap |
| NVR824 | 24 | 16 TB each | RAID 0 to 60, N+1 hot spare |
| Uniarch NVR-108E, NVR-116E | 1 | 6 TB | Consumer line, same platform |
Single-drive units follow the steps on this page directly. The RAID models need all member drives handled together, which the RAID NVR guide covers. Videcon, LTS and other partner badges on Uniview hardware behave the same way as the Uniview original.
Why does a Uniview NVR drive look empty on a PC?
Because the NVR formats the drive in its own way before it will record to it, as the NVR302 manual notes when it says a new disk must be formatted and that doing so erases all data. That format lays down the recorder's structures rather than NTFS or FAT, so Windows Disk Management lists the drive as unallocated or RAW and offers to initialise it. Accepting the offer writes Windows structures over the recorder's index. Decline it. The recordings are intact underneath and the only thing missing is a reader that understands the layout.
What do the Uniview HDD status labels mean?
Uniview's own troubleshooting notes use two words for a drive: Normal and Abnormal, shown under Menu, Storage, Hard Disk on the monitor or Setup, Hard Disk in the browser. The quick guide adds LED meanings: a steady HD light means no disk or an abnormal disk, a steady red HDn light marks an abnormal drive in a bay and a blinking red one means an array is rebuilding. Uniview provides a S.M.A.R.T. test and a bad sector detection under Maintenance, HDD and warns that bad sectors cause data loss. An Abnormal drive that was recording yesterday has usually lost its SATA lead, its power margin or its index, and the recordings are still on it. If the NVR offers a format to clear the status, read the drive on a PC first. The format prompt guide explains why.
What are the recovery steps for a Uniview NVR drive?
- Switch the NVR off. Uniview recorders default to Overwrite rather than Full and Stop, so the oldest footage is being replaced while the unit runs.
- Remove the drive. One drive on NVR301 and Uniarch units, two on NVR302. Label bays on anything larger.
- Attach it to a Windows PC. A SATA dock will do. Cancel the Windows initialise prompt. Put a write blocker in line if the footage is for a legal matter.
- Read the Uniview layout. Load the drive in DVRXaminer, which knows the Uniview recorder layout, places recordings per camera on a timeline and flags deleted segments.
- Save MP4 to another disk. Preview, select and export with timestamps intact.
What if the Uniview admin password is forgotten?
Reading the drive needs no login. For the NVR, Uniview offers more routes than most. Older units ship with admin and 123456 and demand a change at first login. The Forgot Password screen on the NVR shows a QR code which the EZView or UNV-Link app scans under Forgot Device Password, after which a security code is emailed to the address bound to the unit. Where no email is bound, Uniview's website takes a password reset request with the 20-digit serial number, model and the current date shown on the device, then returns a temporary password or security code within about two working hours; the date must match or the generated password will not work. Uniview's password reset portal is the official entry point, and the service is not offered in a handful of sanctioned countries.
Will Uniview exports and recovered clips play?
Uniview's USB backup writes .mp4 by default and DVD backups .ts, and Uniview recommends its own EZPlayer, which plays both and checks the embedded watermark. VLC also handles them. Clips recovered from the drive are already MP4 with timestamps, so no player question arises. The DVR file player lookup covers the rest of the industry's formats.
What are the odds on a Uniview drive?
| Situation | Outlook |
|---|---|
| Recording deleted or expired from the NVR | Good until overwritten |
| Drive formatted in the NVR | Good if the NVR was stopped soon after |
| Status Abnormal, format refused | Good; read on a PC |
| Password lost | No effect |
| NVR dead, drive fine | Full |
| RAID array degraded or failed | Depends on member drives; see RAID guide |
In short
- Uniview and Uniarch NVRs write their own drive layout; Windows shows the drive as empty and offers to initialise it.
- Deleted and formatted recordings remain on the drive until overwritten; Uniview publishes no recovery route.
- Power off, remove the drive, decline the initialise prompt and open it in layout-aware software.
- Password resets go through EZView, UNV-Link or Uniview's portal and are never needed for the drive.
Common questions
Is deleted Uniview NVR footage recoverable?
Yes, until the NVR overwrites it. Uniview NVRs default to Overwrite, so stop the unit at once. Take the drive out, dock it on a Windows PC, skip the initialise prompt and open it in software that recognises the Uniview layout, which shows every camera's recordings by time and exports MP4.
Why does my Uniview NVR hard drive show as unallocated on my computer?
The NVR formats the drive in its own layout before recording, as the NVR302 manual describes. That layout is not NTFS or FAT. Windows cannot read it, shows it as unallocated or RAW and offers to initialise it. Decline, because initialising writes over the recorder's index.
What does Abnormal mean under Hard Disk on a Uniview NVR?
The NVR could not use the drive. Uniview's notes use only Normal and Abnormal, and the front panel HD light stays on for no disk or an abnormal disk. Most often a SATA lead has worked loose, the power supply is weak or the NVR will not accept the index. The recordings are on the drive; read it on a PC before formatting.
How do I reset a Uniview NVR password?
Three routes. Scan the QR code on the Forgot Password screen with EZView or UNV-Link to receive a security code by email. Or submit the 20-digit serial number, model and current device date on Uniview's password reset website for a temporary password within about two working hours. Older units default to admin and 123456. None of this is needed to read the drive.
Are Uniarch and Videcon recorders the same as Uniview?
Uniarch is Uniview's own sub-brand for homes and small businesses, and Videcon in the UK sells Uniview hardware under its own name through a partnership announced in 2021. Both use the Uniview platform and drive layout, so the recovery steps are the same.
What format does a Uniview NVR export?
USB backups are .mp4 by default and DVD backups are .ts. Uniview recommends its EZPlayer, which plays both and verifies the watermark, and VLC opens them too. Recordings recovered from the drive are exported as MP4 with timestamps.
Read the Uniview drive the NVR will not
DVRXaminer knows the Uniview and Uniarch NVR drive layout, places recordings per camera on a timeline, flags deleted segments and exports MP4 with timestamps intact. Scan and preview are free in the trial.
