Recover Prama DVR FootageHikvision Firmware, Indian Badge, Same Drive Layout

Prama recorders sit in shops, offices and housing societies across India, and the label on the front is the only thing that is not Hikvision about them. When a recording is deleted, the admin password is lost or the unit itself fails, the drive inside can still be read on a Windows PC, and the footage recovered, without touching the recorder at all.

The short answer

A Prama DVR is a Hikvision recorder sold under a joint-venture badge, so its hard drive is formatted the Hikvision way and Windows cannot open it. To recover deleted Prama footage, power the recorder down, take the drive out, connect it to a Windows PC with a SATA dock and click Cancel on the initialise prompt. A tool that parses the Hikvision drive format then lists the recordings, including deleted ones, and exports them. No admin password is needed.

Prama Hikvision India is the joint venture through which Hikvision sells in India. Prama had distributed Hikvision products since 2004, the two signed a memorandum in November 2008 and the company was incorporated in February 2009. A manufacturing plant at Vasai near Mumbai opened in October 2019. Prama-branded DVRs and NVRs run Hikvision firmware, use the Hik-Connect app and share model numbering with the Hikvision range, which is why every recovery note written for Hikvision applies to a Prama box.

What is on a Prama DVR hard drive?

Not a file system in the normal sense. Hikvision firmware writes a master block near the start of the drive, a tree-style index of recordings and then the video in fixed data blocks of roughly 1 GB each. Each block carries a small header and the raw H.264 or H.265 stream for one camera over one stretch of time. A 2015 forensic study of Hikvision drives documented the master sector, the index structure and the block size, and the design has not changed in a way that matters for recovery.

Windows understands NTFS, FAT and exFAT. It does not understand this, so Disk Management shows the Prama drive as unallocated or asks to initialise it. That prompt is the one thing to avoid, because initialising writes over the master block and the index.

PRAMA (HIKVISION) DRIVE, START TO END Master block Recording index Block ~1 GB Block ~1 GB Block ~1 GB … Windows reads none of this and reports an unallocated disk. Do not initialise it.
The index is the key. Delete a clip on the recorder and only the index entry goes; the video block stays until it is reused.

How is deleted footage recovered from a Prama DVR?

Work on a Windows PC and never let anything write to the drive.

  1. Switch the Prama DVR off. Pull the power lead. Every minute it runs is another minute of overwrite.
  2. Take the drive out. Four screws on the lid, two cables on the drive. If the unit has more than one bay, label which drive came from where.
  3. Connect it to the PC. A SATA dock or adapter is enough. When Windows offers to initialise, click Cancel. For evidence work, put a write blocker between the drive and the PC.
  4. Read the Hikvision format. Run DVRXaminer against the physical disk. It parses the master block and index and shows recordings per channel on a timeline, with deleted segments flagged.
  5. Save the clips elsewhere. Export the segments you need as MP4 or AVI to the PC or a USB drive, never back to the Prama disk.

Does the Prama admin password matter?

Not for recovery. The password guards the menu and the Hik-Connect link, and the drive does not know it exists. For getting back into the live recorder, Prama units follow the Hikvision reset routes: security questions or a GUID file if either was set at activation, or an export file from the Forgot Password screen or the SADP tool sent to support, which answers with an import file. Hikvision removed the older local reset code from the menu in 2016, so a reset on a current Prama box always goes through one of these. The SADP tool and iVMS-4200 client are on the Hikvision software download page, and the locked-out DVR guide walks through the recovery side in more detail.

Why does a Prama DVR say HDD error or no HDD?

The Hikvision firmware inside a Prama recorder reports three states for a drive it is unhappy with: Abnormal, Does Not Exist and No HDD Detected. Abnormal usually means the drive responded but its index failed a check. Does Not Exist and No HDD Detected point at cabling, power or a drive that has stopped spinning up. The recorder's own advice for Abnormal is to format the drive, which erases everything on it. If the recordings matter, skip that, pull the drive and read it on a PC first.

What if a Prama backup will not play on a PC?

Exports from the recorder's USB backup menu come out in Hikvision's own wrapper, which VLC and Windows Media Player cannot open. The fix is the VSPlayer that Hikvision ships, or a conversion. Recovery from the drive avoids this, since DVRXaminer writes standard MP4. For an export you already have, see why a Hikvision MP4 export will not play.

Is recovered Prama footage usable as evidence?

Yes, when the drive is handled the right way. Read it through a write blocker, keep the original timestamps in the export, record the hash of the exported file and note who handled the drive and when. The police complaint guide covers what Indian police stations and courts expect from CCTV evidence.

In short

  • Prama DVRs and NVRs are Hikvision recorders under an Indian joint-venture badge, so the drive uses the Hikvision format.
  • Power down, remove the drive, dock it on a Windows PC and refuse the initialise prompt.
  • Software that parses the Hikvision index recovers deleted Prama footage and exports MP4.
  • Neither the admin password nor an HDD error stops the recovery.

Common questions

Can deleted footage be recovered from a Prama DVR?

Yes, until the recorder overwrites it. Power the Prama DVR off, remove the hard drive, connect it to a Windows PC and cancel the initialise prompt. Software that reads the Hikvision drive format lists the recordings per channel, flags the deleted segments and exports them as MP4.

Is Prama the same as Hikvision?

Prama Hikvision India is a joint venture between Prama and Hikvision, incorporated in 2009 after Prama had distributed Hikvision products in India since 2004. Prama-branded DVRs and NVRs run Hikvision firmware, use the Hik-Connect app and store video in the Hikvision drive format.

How do I reset a Prama DVR password?

Through the Hikvision routes: answer the security questions or import the GUID file if either was set, or export a reset file from the Forgot Password screen or the SADP tool and send it to support, who return an import file. The older local reset code was dropped from the menu in 2016. None of this is needed to recover footage from the drive.

What does HDD Abnormal mean on a Prama DVR?

The drive answered but its index failed the firmware's check. The recorder's menu suggests formatting, which wipes the recordings. If they matter, remove the drive and read it on a PC first, then format a new drive in the recorder.

Can I open a Prama DVR hard drive on my computer?

Not with Windows alone. The drive uses the Hikvision format with a master block, an index and video blocks of about 1 GB, so Windows reports it as unallocated. Cancel any initialise prompt and open the drive in DVRXaminer, which reads that format directly.

Will recovered Prama footage work for a police complaint?

Yes, if the drive is read through a write blocker, the export keeps the original timestamps, the exported file is hashed and the handling is written down. Those steps are what the police and courts look for in CCTV evidence.

Recover your Prama recordings

DVRXaminer reads the Hikvision format on a Prama DVR or NVR drive, lists every recording per channel with deleted segments flagged and exports MP4 with the original timestamps. The free scan shows what is there before you buy.
