CP Plus DVR Hard Disk Not DetectedFind the Cause Before You Format
The recorder boots and the cameras show live, then the warning appears: no hard disk, or a disk error in the storage menu. On a CP Plus DVR this is usually power or cabling, sometimes a disk the model cannot use and now and then a disk on its way out. The order you check things in decides whether the recordings survive the repair.
A CP Plus DVR reports No HDD or a disk error when it cannot talk to the hard disk. The usual reasons are a weak power adapter, a loose SATA lead, a disk the model does not support or a disk that is failing. Check the status under Main Menu, Storage, Disk Manager, reseat the leads and try a known-good adapter before anything else. Do not format the disk while it holds recordings you need.
CP Plus recorders are built on the Dahua platform, and the disk warnings behave the same way across the range: the front panel HDD light comes on when the disk status is abnormal, and the storage menu lists the disk as missing or in error. The warning is a symptom, not a verdict on the disk, so treat the first ten minutes as diagnosis.
What does the no HDD warning mean on a CP Plus DVR?
It means the recorder could not find a working disk when it started, or lost contact with it afterwards. Live view carries on because the cameras do not depend on the disk, but nothing is being recorded and playback shows nothing. Open Main Menu, then Storage, then Disk Manager. A disk that is present but faulty shows an error status there. A disk the recorder cannot see at all does not appear in the list. That difference points you to the cause.
Why is the hard disk not detected?
Four causes cover almost every CP Plus report, and they are listed from most to least common.
- A weak or failing power adapter. The recorder may have enough power to boot but not enough to spin the disk. Owners on the Dahua platform fix more no-disk faults by swapping the adapter than by any other step.
- A loose SATA data or power lead. Leads work loose after the unit is moved or opened, and a lead can fail on its own.
- A disk the model does not support. The manual tells you to fit the officially recommended surveillance disk and not a PC disk. Each model also has a size limit: a 4 channel CP-UVR lists up to 6 TB, and NVR models list 8 TB or 20 TB per disk.
- A disk that is failing. Slow spin-up, clicking, a disk that appears and vanishes or a SMART warning in Disk Manager all mean the disk is wearing out.
"Most no-disk warnings on a CP Plus box come down to the power adapter. When it is not that, image the disk before it dies."

How do you fix a CP Plus DVR that does not detect the hard disk?
Follow this order. Each step is safe for the recordings until the final one.
- Switch the recorder off. Do not keep rebooting it, since a weak disk takes damage with every spin-up.
- Swap the power adapter. Borrow a known-good adapter of the same rating from another unit. If the disk appears, you have your answer.
- Reseat both leads. Open the case and push the SATA data and power leads firmly home at the disk and the board. Replace the data lead if you have a spare.
- Read the status in Disk Manager. Back in Main Menu, Storage, Disk Manager, note whether the disk is listed, its status and any SMART warning.
- Test the disk on a PC. Dock it to a Windows PC. Disk Management showing it as unallocated is normal for a CP Plus disk and means the disk itself works. Do not initialise it.
- Format only after the footage is safe. If the disk is healthy and nothing on it matters, format it in Disk Manager so the recorder records again. If the recordings matter, recover them first.
Should you format the disk in Disk Manager?
Disk Manager has a format button, and it does clear most disk errors, which is exactly why people press it too soon.
Formatting removes the recordings, and so does letting Windows initialise the disk. Both write a new layout over the video. The mobile app cannot format the disk, so this only ever happens at the recorder or on a PC, which gives you a moment to stop. If anything on that disk may be needed, read it off on a PC before the format.
Is the disk too big or the wrong type?
A brand new disk that never shows up is often outside what the model accepts. CP Plus publishes a maximum per model, for example 6 TB on a 4 channel CP-UVR, 8 TB on a single-bay CP-UNR and 20 TB per disk on the larger CP-UNR units. The manual also warns against fitting a desktop PC disk, which is not built for round-the-clock writing. Check the model page for your unit, and fit a surveillance-rated disk inside the limit. Firmware and model details are on the CP Plus downloads and support page.
What if the disk is failing?
A disk that clicks, spins up and vanishes or carries a SMART warning will not get better with reboots. Each power cycle risks more of the recordings. Stop, remove the disk and image it once on a PC in read only mode so you work from a copy. If it is physically noisy or refuses to spin at all, that is a hardware case, and more attempts only make it worse.
Can the footage be recovered after a no HDD error?
Usually, yes. The warning says the recorder cannot mount the disk, not that the video is gone. If the cause was the adapter or a lead, every recording is still intact. Even a disk that reports an error normally holds the video until something writes over it. Because CP Plus stores recordings in its own layout, Windows will report the disk as blank, yet a tool that reads that layout lists the recordings and exports them. Our CP Plus footage recovery guide has the full steps, and the same warning on Xiongmai-based units is covered in our XMEye no HDD guide.
Which cause do you have?
Match what the recorder shows to the likely cause before you touch the disk.
| What you see | Likely cause | First fix | Recordings at risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disk missing from Disk Manager, unit reboots or hums | Weak power adapter | Swap the adapter | No |
| Disk missing after the unit was moved or opened | Loose SATA lead | Reseat or replace the lead | No |
| New disk never appears | Over the model limit or a PC disk | Fit a supported surveillance disk | No |
| Disk listed with error or SMART warning, clicking | Failing disk | Image it once, read only | Yes, act now |
| Recorder offers to format the disk | Layout not recognised | Recover first, format after | Yes, if you accept |
In short
- No HDD on a CP Plus DVR means the recorder cannot reach the disk, not that the video is lost.
- Check in order: power adapter, SATA leads, Disk Manager status, then the disk on a PC.
- Fit a surveillance disk within the model's limit, never a desktop PC disk.
- Format in Disk Manager only after the recordings are safely read off on a PC.
Common questions
Why does my CP Plus DVR say no hard disk?
The recorder could not find a working disk at boot or lost contact with it. On CP Plus units the common causes are a weak power adapter, a loose SATA lead, a disk the model does not support or a disk that is failing. Check Main Menu, Storage, Disk Manager to see whether the disk is missing or listed with an error.
How do I check the hard disk status on a CP Plus DVR?
Go to Main Menu, then Storage, then Disk Manager. The screen lists each disk with its status and capacity, and shows SMART information for a disk that is present. The gCMOB app can show the disk name, status and free space, but it cannot format or repair the disk.
What size hard disk does a CP Plus DVR support?
It depends on the model. CP Plus lists a maximum per unit, such as 6 TB on a 4 channel CP-UVR, 8 TB on a single-bay CP-UNR and 20 TB per disk on larger CP-UNR models. A disk over the limit may never appear in Disk Manager. Use a surveillance-rated disk, not a desktop PC disk.
Does formatting fix the CP Plus hard disk error?
It clears most disk errors, but it also removes the recordings. If the disk is healthy and nothing on it matters, format it in Disk Manager and the recorder will record again. If the footage matters, read the disk on a PC and export the recordings before you format.
Can a weak power supply cause a CP Plus DVR to lose the hard disk?
Yes, and it is the most common cause. The recorder may boot and show live cameras while the adapter cannot deliver enough current to spin the disk. Swapping in a known-good adapter of the same rating is the first thing to try, before opening the case.
My CP Plus hard disk is not detected, are the recordings gone?
Usually not. The recordings stay on the disk until something writes over them. Connect the disk to a Windows PC and leave it unallocated, do not initialise it, then read it with a tool built for the CP Plus layout. That recovers the recordings whether the fault was power, a lead or the recorder itself.
Save the recordings before you format
DVRXaminer reads a CP Plus disk in the recorder's own layout and exports the recordings as playable video, even when the unit reports no disk. Run the free trial to list what the disk still holds.
